Quick Clarification: VA Community Care vs. Tricare
VA Community Care is for veterans enrolled with the VA who need care that the VA refers them to. The program is governed by the VA MISSION Act (2018), which replaced the older Veterans Choice Act.
Eligibility typically depends on appointment wait times, distance to the nearest VA facility, or the VA’s determination that community care is in the veteran’s best interest. The VA pays the provider directly; the veteran owes nothing for authorized services.
Tricare is the Department of Defense health insurance program for active-duty service members, retirees, and military family dependents. Tricare beneficiaries access PT and OT through the Tricare provider network and are subject to standard Tricare cost-shares.
Synergy is authorized through both programs. Most of the rest of this page focuses on VA Community Care because that’s where the most questions come up. If you’re a Tricare beneficiary, the process is more straightforward — call us with your Tricare information and we’ll handle the rest.

Commonly Used Therapies:
How VA Community Care Works at Synergy
1. Get a community care referral from your VA primary care provider. At your VA appointment, ask your primary care provider for a community care referral for physical therapy or occupational therapy. Specifically request Synergy Healthcare in Spokane Valley as your community provider. The VA will determine whether you meet community care eligibility criteria.
2. Call Synergy and let us know. Once you’ve requested the referral, call us at the number on this page. We’ll start the intake and confirm we’re expecting your authorization paperwork from the VA.
3. Wait for VA authorization, then schedule. The VA sends authorization paperwork directly to Synergy. Once we have the authorization, we’ll call you to schedule. From referral to first appointment is typically 1–3 weeks depending on VA processing time on their end — sometimes faster.
You owe nothing for authorized care. Synergy bills the VA directly.
